What we know and teach is a

Small World Network

mini map

This illustration, which is a small section from the new Map of Science, glimpses the way what humankind knows is self-organizing into a small-world network. As the light blue numbers show above for an example, geography and psychology are linked in this chart of real citations by six degrees of separation. The characteristic clusters, links, and hubs that emerge in small world networks are all present.

The way we do education now stunts and disconnects this natural knowledge network.

Putting knowledge we teach into boxes keeps the natural networking of knowledge from happening. The boxes that dominlate education and disconnect the natural network of knowledge are all too commmon and familiar: curricula, grades, textbooks, and standards.

When we put the gold of what is known into the swamp that is the internet, the knowledge naturally forms a virtual small world network that mirrors the real network of human knowledge. The implications of this fact for education are huge.

The golden age of education lies ahead, when we use this network.
