Why Wire? — ever anymore??

Last week I saw some huge spools — taller than the technicians tending them — unrolling cable to be pulled under Manhattan streets. This technology was cutting edge barely a few years back, but is no more.
I can hardly wait to toss out the mass of tangled small wires that interconnect my computer, monitor, printer, modem, scanner, and assorted black boxes. The tipping point was reached and the mobile cascade is in full sway. Already, as reported here, more than 75% of the world’s population is within mobile range. Transmitters are sweeping the earth and with them, enlightenment spreading like tom-tom beats in widening circles that overlap more richly every day.
I understand that it will take a while, but doing what we can to hasten ubiquitous mobile computing is a potent way to make the world a better place for our youngest generations. Personal, mobile Internet access will deliver directly to each young person great value: entry into the virtual ecology of known by humankind.
